Focus Media Arts Centre began as a response to harmful media stereotypes about Regent Park and grew into a community media organization rooted in youth voice, storytelling, broadcasting and civic engagement.

Focus began in response to concerns from Regent Park residents who felt their community was being unfairly stigmatized in mainstream media.
Many felt this was due to systematic racism against primarily black residents and new immigrants.
Residents organized petitions and letter-writing campaigns to challenge harmful reporting and push for a fuller, more respectful image of Regent Park.
Focus joined black resident groups from Jane and Finch, Parkdale and Warden Woods to form the Communities Against Neighbourhoodism Coalition.
The coalition challenged prejudice against low-income and racialized neighbourhoods and helped bring the idea of âneighbourhoodismâ into public conversation.
Focus moved into a large space at 600 Dundas Street and expanded after-school video programs where young people created videos that challenged stereotypes and celebrated community life.
With editing equipment, studio lights and cameras, the video work grew into what would become Regent Park TV.
Focus supported youth journalism through Catch da Flava, a community publication created to share local stories, youth perspectives and important neighbourhood issues.
The publication reached Regent Park households and community spaces across downtown Toronto.
Catch da Flava youth radio first aired on CIUT 99.1 FM and later moved to CKLN 88.1 FM, giving Regent Park youth a voice across the city and beyond.
This work eventually evolved into Radio Regent, Focusâ community access digital radio platform.
Focus expanded into music recording, DJ workshops, drumming, performance events and photography arts.
The Zapparoli Photography Arts program included a darkroom, exhibition space and projects documenting community life and change.
As Regent Park entered revitalization, Focus documented the changes, concerns and stories of residents through video, radio, print and photography.
Community media became an important way to keep residents informed and preserve local memory during redevelopment.
Focus continues its work through Regent Park TV, Radio Regent, community journalism, media training, workshops, youth mentorship and civic storytelling.
